By 1995, Bauer skates and other subsidiaries of parent company Canstar provided 70 percent of the NHL market share of equipment. In 1994, Nike decided to enter the ice hockey equipment business by purchasing Canstar and becoming an immediate equipment juggernaut. To cut down on company costs, Nike moved most of its Bauer production to underdeveloped countries such as China and Thailand.
