Hockey Masks
Elizabeth Graham donned the hockey mask in 1927 as a way to protect her face from potential damage while guarding her goal during the hockey matches she enjoyed. The first mask worn in a hockey game was actually a fencing mask. Clint Benedict is credited with developing the first hockey mask designed for the goalie to wear. Benedict's leather mask provided little protection and was very hot, so he only wore it for a couple of games in 1929. In 1959, Jacques Plante started wearing a mask while guarding the goal for the Canadiens. Plante decided to wear the mask after breaking his nose, jaw, skull and cheekbones in a game. Plante's white mask was made of fiberglass and is credited for starting the trend of goalies wearing masks.
